Allan Billard grew up in Dartmouth’s sprint canoe racing community. When he graduated as a marine biologist he helped to negotiate domestic quotas and several international fisheries agreements. He also produced 500+ commentaries for CBC Radio’s Fishermen’s Broadcast and Radio Canada International. Along the way, he started the annual Canoe to the Sea event on the Shubenacadie waterway and led several other marathon canoe efforts including the ICF Marathon Canoe World Championships in 2000. When he retired he became volunteer manager of the Shubenacadie Canal Commission, focusing on small boat access along the entire length of the system.
Allan is the author of nine non-fiction books on our province’s coastal and shoreline resources, including waterfalls, beaches, canals and lighthouses. He also wrote the book on the recent visit of the Tall Ships to the Maritimes.
