Adaptive Paddling Solutions Society (APSS) Newsletter – Summer 2025 Edition Who Are We? Founded in May 2022, Adaptive Paddling Solutions Society (APSS) is a nonprofit with a big dream: to make paddling accessible for everyone, regardless of ability. Imagine gliding across Nova Scotia’s beautiful lakes, rivers, and coastal waters—the calm, the connection, the sense of freedom that paddling brings. Now imagine that experience isn’t available to you—not because you don’t want to paddle, but because there are barriers in the way. For many people with disabilities, traditional paddling programs simply don’t make room [...]

2025-07-04T15:54:40-03:00

Southwest Paddling Association Summer Update 2025 It’s all systems go (and all canoes and kayaks are “to-the-ready”) for SWPA members this summer. SWPA had three successful Adaptive Paddling instructional sessions with Pauline Halstead this spring and 10 of our members just completed an Emergency First Aid and CPR course.  We bought four great kayaks and lots of gear from Old Creel & Canoe for our Adaptive Paddling program (thanks to Mike and Krystle for being such amazing supporters!) We will be providing programming for several community groups every Tuesday and Thursday during [...]

Paddle Without Barriers #2

2025-05-15T17:49:40-03:00

How to get someone into a kayak who uses a wheelchair by Pauline Halstead Barriers, barriers and more barriers.  For today, I will only talk about the physical barriers. Imagine a keen adaptive paddler, patiently waiting in their wheelchair, imagining what floating on the water will be like.   What comes first - the transfer on the beach or by the water?  If by the water, how to get the person in the wheelchair across the beach?  These days, there are many options to do this.  But, back then, it was a head-scratching challenge.  At that time, Dee did not [...]

Paddle Without Barriers

2024-12-09T12:52:45-04:00

By Pauline Halstead Fences, brick walls, doors - this is what most of us think of when the word "barrier" pops up.  Imagine kayakers leaping over a fence, racing to get up speed to jump over.  Quite the feat!  What about the barriers in our heads, the "I can't do that," or "They can't do that......?"  Almost 25 years ago, when I was working at an outdoor adventure show for a hiking company, a lady using a wheelchair stopped by and said she would like to go hiking.  Hmmm, I suggested that paddling might be a little easier for her.  With [...]
