Learn to Sea Kayak - Basic/Intro

Location: Norse Cove Campground, 100 Wild Islands, Tangier NS
Event Description: Saturday Aug 29, 2020 - Basic/Intro Sea Kayaking Course!
One day long - Learn the basics of sea kayaking safety, in this Paddle Canada certified course, taught by sea kayak instructor Eleanor. 

9 am to 5 pm - arrive at 8:30am at Norse Cove Campground in Tangier - in the 100 Wild Islands! 

This course is appropriate for anyone who would like to take up kayaking and it's ok if you've had zero experience.
Course fee: $110 per person -
Kayak Rental - from Norse Cove Campground: a SPECIAL rate for course participants: $55+ hst 

Maximum of 6 participants per one instructor
6 foot distancing will be respected if desired.
This course will run with a minimum of 3 participants.

Cold water safety, sun safety,
Paddling clothing and gear,
boat design and what makes a kayak sea-worthy, and what affects how one kayak moves differently than another.
Locating info about winds and weather in order to plan a paddling day, in an appropriate location-
efficient forward and reverse strokes,
turning strokes and stopping,
Draw strokes (moving sideways)
Bracing to avoid a capsize
Edging for boat control
Risk assessment and navigation basics
Wet-exists (capsizing on purpose so you'll know what it's like)
Assisted re-entry (helping a person get back in the kayak, and being helped back in yourself)

Make a day of it and camp overnight at the beautiful Norse Cove Campground- Kim and Werner are lovely hosts.
There are sweet "Norse Huts" available, or tenting - please contact Kim to reserve a spot, or to rent a kayak if you need one.

This event takes place on unceded, unsurrendered Territory of the Mi’kmaq People. We are all Treaty People and have responsibilities to each other, this land and these beautiful waters.
