Michael splits his paddling time between sea kayaks and big canoes. He has been kayaking for 10 years, mostly around St. Margaret’s Bay and Mahone Bay, but also on longer trips throughout the Maritimes. His favorite trip was a four day trip in 2018 around Cape Chignecto.
After he retired from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, he started paddling big canoes (>26 ft long), and finds it a great way to take extended trips with a group of paddlers. He paddled in the Rideau River Brigade from Kingston to Ottawa in a 26’ canoe in 2013. In 2017, he helped organize a brigade down the St. John River as part of the Canada 150 celebrations, and paddled a 29’ canoe down the river. Since then, he has chaired the CKNS Big Canoe Committee which has purchased a 26’ canoe for use by members. He became the Secretary/Treasurer for CKNS in November, 2018.
