Notes from Southwest Paddlers Association

This past season was the best yet! Launched our Big Canoe, co-operators; hosted a Big Boat Leader course with 16 participants; co-operators took part in the Bras d’Or Lake Brigade, Bridgewater La Have River Festival, a presentation and paddle at Keji, and other local activities.

SWPA members Eko Raharjo and Alec d’Entremont led the way on a multi-day trip down the length of the Tusket River (both the fresh water portion in canoes, followed by salt water portion in kayaks; members joined them at various points.)

From May to September, each month featured a club paddle in various locations in our region. Also, Tom Blackford provided a Level 1 kayking course; Ginny Smith held a session for the community re: feeling safe in the water; Eko Raharjo held learn & play SUP sessions at Lake Ellenwood … and more.

We’ve resumed meeting for lunch this fall and winter on the first Sunday of each month. We always have a special program related to paddling, and CKNS members welcome to join us any time! (Contact me for details. sandracphinney@gmail.com)

Plans for 2025 are already in the works! Our focus this year will be to start an Adaptive Paddling program. Lots of excitement about this. Stay tuned!
