Southwest Paddling Association launches Adaptive Paddling Program!
SWPA has partnered with 11 community organizations that work with youth and adults with physical and cognitive challenges, and will provide weekly paddling programs for their clients. We also have an ambitious paddling program with Acadia First Nation, immigrants, and seniors.
Remember the 29-ft. Big Canoe that Wayne Doucette and SWPA volunteers made last year? She’ll be part of the fleet, along with four kayaks and two canoes.
This special program is made possible with the generous support from Sport Nova Scotia (EDIA program) and the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia (Old Ladies Home Society Fund).
Pauline Haltstead will provide three adaptive instructional sessions for SWPA members and staff of our partnered organizations. Thirty are registered ( ten for each session) and they are keen to go!
Mike and Krystle at Old Creel Canoe & Kayak were hugely helpful, giving us special rates for kayaks, paddles, and gear. We are just waiting for specialized equipment from other sources, including a special cart, transfer bench, seats, outriggers, etc.
We are also grateful for the support of the Yarmouth Recreation Department and staff at NS Parks, as we’ll be doing programs at their locations, including Lake Milo, Lake Ellenwood, Islands Park Campground, and Glenwood Lake.
2025 promises to be a great paddling season!
Stay tuned~
